I’ve made colored oats in the past, and I let G play in a sensory bin of rice all the time. He loves to dig his hand in it, scoop it into varies bowls, and pour it through a funnel.
In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, I thought it would be fun to make some red and pink colored rice for Valentine’s themed sensory bin. You can use any color you like though.
How to dye rice for sensory play:
This is an incredibly simple sensory activity.
You need:
1 Cup Rice (per color)
1 Tbs White Vinegar
1 tsp Food Coloring
Ziploc Bags
- Pour the vinegar and coloring into a Ziploc bag, added the cup of rice and shake it up until the colored vinegar seems to have fully saturated the rice. Let your kiddos help with this step. They love to shake the bags.
- Dump the rice out on to a baking sheet lined with paper towels and set it out to dry. This can take an hour or so.
- Repeat for all the different color batches. Try this with any color for any holiday-themed bin.
